What is a Green Card Green Card?

A Green Card allows non-U.S. citizens to establish permanent residency in the United States and legally obtain employment. In some countries, it is also known as a Permanent Resident Card.

A U.S. Green Card can provide a sense of belonging and stability in a country that values diversity and opportunity. You will have the freedom to live and work anywhere in the United States and the possibility of seeking U.S. citizenship in three to five years.

How to Apply for Residence?

Some people may apply for residency from within the United States through the Adjustment of Status process. However, others must apply for residency from outside the United States through the Consular Processing.

Adjustment of Status

The person must be in the United States and have entered legally with some type of visa or parole.

Individuals with family petitions filed on or before April 30, 2001, may also apply for residency in the United States.

Consular Process

Anyone who has not legally entered the United States or who resides in another country will need to go in person to the U.S. consulate/embassy in their country of birth to process their residency application.

It is essential that before leaving the United States, you consult with an experienced attorney because upon departure, you could be subject to punishment and unable to return. The person may qualify for a [waiver], but some waivers must be requested before the person leaves the United States.
